The dreaded post-holiday weigh-in

After the Christmas and New Year holidays, many people approach the scale with dread. But the number it shows doesn’t tell the whole story.

Body weight naturally fluctuates by 1-2 kg from one day to the next due to water retention, gut contents and hormonal variation — not necessarily a real increase in fat mass.

Rather than focusing only on the number on the scale, it’s more useful to look at body composition over time (for example with bioimpedance analysis) and gradually return to your usual eating habits, without resorting to drastic or restrictive post-holiday diets.

This is a short starter draft — it will be expanded with more detail and supporting evidence.
